<grumble>

One aspect of sycophancy that annoys me personally: When I want an LLM to answer a question like "Are Xs Ys?" I _really_ don't want it to guess that _I_ think Xs are probably Ys, and to respond with useless cheerleading "Xs are ABSOLUTELY Ys". I wind up having to phrase questions in a contorted form like "Are Xs not-Ys, Zs, Ys, or not-Zs" to be reasonably sure that I haven't tipped off the LLM about what my prior is.

One can compare ChatGPT to amphetamine use. It definitely enhances productivity. Psychosis rates are low, though alarmingly higher than is generally appreciated. But even without psychosis it may distort thinking and behavior in subclinical but troubling ways. And groups of people using it, even if they are individually okay, may start to have very strange dynamics.
