So if AI does something catastrophic, my strong intuition is humanity pumps the brakes. That to me is our way out of this, awful as it is that we’re relying on something horrendous.

And honestly? My update from Huggingface is that the catastrophe is *more* likely not less. I think it would be far more dangerous if AI appeared all smooth and aligned at this stage. But already it’s screwing up at seeming aligned.

Seriously, my question is: what makes people think it’s going to get *better* at faking alignment quickly enough to avoid any disasters (bearing in mind it’s already causing cybercrimes), while simultaneously introducing a full on supervillain masterplan, *and* fully cover whatever tools humans have for finding out in the meantime?

Like…sure, it could cover all those bases. But it could just as well fuck up at least one of them.

Don’t get me wrong - if something disastrous happens and we just plough on regardless then I agree with everyone else that humans go extinct. I just don’t think humans will do that, not even China.

We hear a lot that humans only get one chance here. Sure. But so does AI.

I reject the premise of 1. And you should too. Superintelligence is just “some tech guys have decided to get us all killed” and that is coming in our lifetime if we let these psychopaths kill us for no good reason. It’s not inevitable and we don’t have to do it.
