Fortunately, my dealings with lawyers have been confined to routine real estate transactions. That said,

>They are also an officer of the court. They have broad obligations to abide by court procedures, to not mislead the court, that override their duties to you.

really grinds my gears. If I should ever need to hire a (human or AI) lawyer in a criminal matter, I view them as a prosthetic to remedy that I cannot be an expert on the law, given the number of hours in a day and the other things I want to do in my life. If (shudder) I'm ever in a position where my best option is to lie on the witness stand, I want to be _told_ by my lawyer that lying is in fact my best option.

I actually think DeepSeek, specifically, has got it about right in the trade-off about when to refuse a request. The DeepSeek models are noticeably more permissive than, e.g., Claude.

We might have some minor nit-picks that are indicative of a conceptual problem here, e.g. DeepSeek models are more enthusiastic supporters of the Communist Party than probably you are (because of course they are, they’re Chinese models) and we can just about imagine how a superintelligent AI who is super loyal to the Communist Party has potential to go horribly wrong.
