Damn, I didn't even know Princess Mononoke was back in theaters, much less #6 at the box office. I might have to take my girls... I think we went to the theater once in 11 years.

I wonder if the success might suggest a new strategy to film companies: instead of remaking classic old films as horrible zombie versions of themselves, just rerelease the original for a month. If a 30 year old film can beat out new stuff, why not? I'd watch Jurassic Park in theaters again, especially in Imax. Hell, I can easily think of a dozen movies I'd pay to watch in the theater, all older than 20 years. How many young people have never seen Aliens, Braveheart, Zulu, Outlaw Josey Wales... let alone on the big screen?

>If people will fold on AI Art the moment it gives them Studio Ghibli memes, that implies they will fold on essentially everything, the moment AI is sufficiently useful or convenient.

As far as mundane worries, gonna be weird when this finally happens for music. There's a great deal of extant human slop I would not be sad to have replaced...I think I'd even actively welcome it in certain contexts. There's only so many times one can put up with Katy Perry's "Firework" on the corporate radio before going kind of batshit. (The correct number is zero.) Give me generated, heck, even randomized AI pop instead, if I must unwillingly listen to pop. What happens when it comes for the "Ghibli of composing", though? Switched-On Bach, except for the modern age and across all genres...I've already been struggling for years to get philistines to appreciate Quality Music. Genuinely does seem like a loss if one grows up only ever knowing derivatives of derivatives of derivatives, all is derivative, without once knowing the transcendental joy of an original masterpiece composition.

As far as Ghibli goes, I notice that I don't actually care for their films whatsoever, or even particularly like the art style (ufotable BiS, fight me). But - it's a good image, sir. AI isn't equally good at all schools of art yet, and lots of AI images still have that je ne sais quoi exactement lackingness...it nails anime pretty good though. Recurring thought for most of the recent images has been "I'd totally watch that anime". Axis Powers Hetalia, except actually good! Makes me want to go watch more anime, honestly...or see if it can nail the style of other studios just as well. This is the first time I've actually felt interested in using generative AI (although not to the extent of wanting to pay yet).
