I've learned to always buy the tickets directly from the airline on their website. The price is the same (use the other websites to shop) but if you have to make changes/get a refund it's VASTLY easier if you bought direct. [Perhaps because they don't have to pay a commission if you buy direct.]

I don't think checking bags is as bad as most people think, and it surprises me that the flight-taking "culture" is so against it.

Sure, it does mean spending a bit more money and a bit more time waiting around, so there's that. But in exchange I get a *much* better trip: I can bring extra clothes or anything else I might want, I don't have to tote it around the airport, I don't have to worry liquids or sharp things in my bag, and I can board the plane without worrying about overhead space.

And perhaps I'm just lucky, but I haven't had a bag lost in the last ~10 years? The last time it happened, the bag was found quickly, put on the next flight to my city, and the airline had a guy bring it to my house directly. I was only without the bag for maybe 6 hours? Not the end of the world.

So yeah, maybe try checking a bag once in a while. It's not so bad. :) Maybe not checking is still slightly better on average, but IMHO checking isn't a super clear loser like maybe it once was.
