The politics turning into a runaway train is what we should hope for. Do you guys want a mass movement or not? If the answers yes then you gotta settle for “data center is bad” cuz no mass movement is ever gonna be “RLHF causes misalignment, down with instrumental convergence”.

Dismissing the anti-data center movement is a mistake, I think, for anyone who cares about the existential risk of AI. On one hand, this movement can actually help to slow down the industry, which is a good thing in itself. But more importantly, it helps put AI issues at the center of the political debate, which is also a good thing. As the risks of loss of control and existential threats become more tangible (with events like the recent incidents reported in July), this movement is likely to incorporate these risks into its discourse, and to become a force that will push for a treaty with China to stop the AI race.

Bernie Sanders is an example of someone who’s already bridging this movement with concern for existential risk and the need to stop the superintelligence race.
