"What should you do if your brand is widely distrusted and toxic? "

About 1-2% of US adults are genuinely aware of the term "effective altruism" and 65-70% of them had a positive view, 20–28% had a negative view. Of those who weren't aware but given a description, 57% were positive, 36% were neutral, and 7% were negative.

I can't speak for Will, and I know we disagree on the merits of IABIED, but personally, I felt a fair amount of pressure in EA and AI Safety circles to write a more positive review for PR reasons. Many people told me that I should emphasize my agreements upfront because ultimately the book could do a lot of good by getting people to take AI x-risk more seriously. To be clear, I didn't feel that this pressure was overwhelming, and don't feel that I faced any social consequences for writing the review I wrote – but to the extent I felt any pressure to talk about the book differently, it was all in the direction of providing more positive coverage, not less. I do not think there was any strategic decision by anyone to pan the book because of PR.
