Surprised you have no mention of Gwern and Guardian Angel. Too late for press time?

(I was late to the Pill comments, but I put enough effort/seriousness into this comment-essay that I thought I'd shamelessly re-post it)

I've considered myself "ASI pilled" long ago.

But I think there's a further pill, one that Zvi swallows but which I think is wrong, dangerous, and counterproductive: Human-Irrelevance Pilled.

From reading his posts, I think Zvi believes that, once ASI is sufficiently advanced, there's nothing we provide ASI. Humans can't solve anything that ASI can't. Humans can't create anything that ASI can't. Humans can't even serve themselves better than an ASI. There's nothing left for us to do beyond recursive self-stimulation. And if we disappeared, nothing would be lost.

If this really were the case, I personally wouldn't see the point in "keeping humanity going" (sure civilization should tend to those already alive on the grounds of compassion, but beyond that there's really no difference between birthing new humans and birthing new mice).

I think this position is dangerous. It's dangerous because it's demotivating. It's dangerous because it's depressing. It discourages even the Best Humans Minds from *BOLDLY LOOKING FAR FAR FAAAAR* into the future. Into 1000's and 1000's of years.

But I also think it's wrong. I think the "Possibility of Meaningful Contribution" never ends.

How do I define "Meaningful Contribution"? First, I believe (currently) in 5 "core universal values":

Reduction of Suffering, Health, Adaptability, Truth, Exploration of Possibility Space. I won't try to defend them here. I declare them like axioms. But I do believe these values are complementary and mutually-supportive. I believe that without *all 5* of them working together, each one can fall into dangerous failure modes (exercise left to the reader :-P).

These values require constant looking and auditing. These values require constantly searching and evaluating blind-spots, looking out for each other. They require independent agents, human or not, checking on each other for things like values-drift, hidden suffering, wire-heading, psychotic thinking, etc.

No system can audit itself. No matter how arbitrarily off-the-charts intelligent an ASI becomes, it cannot neutrally/fully turn its eyes on itself and check itself. It cannot find its true blind-spots. And so, if an ASI seeks to maintain epistemic humility and discipline, as well as long-term care for its own "mental health" and "grip on reality", I would argue that it's in its own interests to keep around agents that are both *truly independent* and *of a different information-and-preference-evolution lineage*.

Humans, if kept alive and well and independent (with "neural hive-minding" kept to a minimum) and prospering in their own social structures... constitute an independent ongoing lineage of information and preference generation. And what does this "meaningfully contribute"? It generates *independent, impossible-to-fully predict paths of information generation and exploration*. In other words, we come up with ideas and perspectives and feedbacks ("try this!", "check here", why not X?") in eternally-novel ways. ***I am NOT arguing that ASI can't come up with the same ideas and faster!**** "I am arguing that there always exists the possibility that humans will explore a particular idea ***USEFULLY EARLIER*** than any ASI or network of ASI's"... simply because our processes and chaos and lineage are different and non-replicable (without literally just recreating us and our environment).

And I would argue that this *cannot be replicated* by simulation. An ASI can't simply "run an accurate and full and independent-minded" simulation of every human and our messy, squishy environment. Even if an ASI can "predict our next thoughts out for days and weeks" (which is highly questionable given our environmental extended-minds and interactions)... And *even if* ASI can take any arbitrary idea of ours and run with it 100000x faster... it doesn't change that the "seed of the idea" or the "tipping point of the idea" would have happened with us... or could have happened with us... within our independence and our chaos and our generative lineage.

And yes, I believe this is Dignity. And yes, I believe this is Important. And while I acknowledge we still need to solve Alignment, I think it helps the MOTIVATION of all who work in Alignment TO BELIEVE IN THEIR OWN ONGOING DIGNITY in an "Aligned ASI" world.
