There's a moment in Terry Pratchett's Guards! Guards! where the characters calculate their odds of slaying a dragon at one million to one. They hearten themselves with the knowledge that last desperate chances always succeed, because "the gods wouldn't let it be any other way."

I think that's where we're heading with AI. We'll keep pushing the frontier, continuously raising the stakes, until the last desperate chance is the only one left. What happens next, I don't know, but I hope, as Pratchett's characters do, that the gods are on our side and playing by our rules.
