The implied value that people place on their time by not upgrading to ad-free streaming tiers is insanely low. Maybe $10/hour on the higher side for a less frequent viewer and as low as $1/hour for frequent viewers.

The counterfactual is kind of hilarious to imagine. If you offered to pay $5/hour for people to sit and watch ads, very few people would take you up on that offer. But if you flip the default a majority will sit through the ads for an objectively modest monthly discount.

Woke 1: I imagine it was pretty scary to notice when people started saying 'World War 1' instead of 'The Great War.'

Sedaris: I wonder if the post office was a more pleasant place in Vonnegut's time? I currently pay extra for the pleasure of going to the UPS store, as opposed to the local USPS.

Unicontext: Parfit would say that identity *isn't* constant, and I think that idea can help explain some of the strange things we've seen in formerly smart people in the last ~10 years (not naming any names...). They really aren't the "same" person they were when they had their genuinely good ideas; Relation-R and all that. Upshot: try to slow-roll your R decay?

Loaner Teslas: I've long held that half the benefit of a car is that it's a lockbox on wheels. Keeping spare clothes, hobby gear, etc., in your car is really useful. You lose that in the loaner Tesla world. Though city dwellers have functionally lost much of that already because of the sadly necessary "don't leave anything visible in your car" norm.
